A healthy canary gives off a lively and cheerful impression. Thin birds or birds with dirty undertail feathers may be sick. The feathers should fit snugly, and the bird should not be bloated. It should also not breathe audibly or have an open mouth. When the belly feathers are bloated, no dark red or dark purple spots should be visible. If you see a sick canary, take immediate action. Remove the bird from its cage and place it in a special cage for sick birds. By separating the bird, you can better monitor it. This will prevent you from infecting other birds and can treat each bird individually if necessary. Place food and water with the bird in the sick cage and make sure it is pleasantly warm. It is also advisable to mix dextrose into the water if the canary is weakened. Sugar is quickly absorbed and provides an extra boost of energy, giving you or the veterinarian more time to diagnose the bird’s condition. If you know how, you can administer the diluted glucose using a frilled needle so the canary ingests it immediately. This way, you can easily deworm the canary or administer other medications. Birds in poor health, but not yet showing serious symptoms, can also be given a course of vitamins and minerals. Additional medications should only be administered by experienced keepers, as a misdiagnosis would only worsen the bird’s condition. Unless you have extensive experience with sick birds, take the bird to a specialist veterinarian.
